![]() ![]() Most armadillos have a litter of four young-two males and two females. They eat insects, eggs, and even other animals if necessary. They are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plant and animal matter. In the winter months, they consume cactus pads, bulbs, and tubers. They feed on these items throughout the year. Just one giant armadillo can eat up to 200,000 ants in a single day. Their diet consists mainly of grasses, herbs, leaves, roots, fruits, seeds, bark, and twigs. These animals require a large number of insects to stay well fed. For example, giant armadillos, southern three-banded armadillo, and pink fairy armadillos mostly eat ants and termites. Some armadillos can jump as high as 3 ft (1 m) straight up to confuse or avoid predators. However, depending on the species, some armadillos may require a more specific diet.(Only one species can since its shell is divided into three sections giving it “flexibility”). Most armadillos cannot roll up into balls, as many people have believed. It has a long, sticky tongue used to capture insects. ![]()
